Interesting or exciting events in the personal lives of the Studio Team

Lauren beats me by 9 years … kinda …

This post is completely personal. I was 16 years old working in a photo lab with a ridiculously expensive camera that was acquired only 6 months earlier. I was attending half day photography classes at the time and with all that under my belt someone thought they would be crazy enough to hire me to shoot their wedding. They didn’t come asking for a deal or even ask if I had any experience. I had a big dog camera and I was in photo classes! Of course I knew what was up! :) I can’t say I felt all the comfortable about it actually but they offered cash and were excited about it. The wedding venue was called the Fountains, I think, which doesn’t exist anymore. I shot it and swore I would never do another one. The couple was pleased with the outcome but I wasn’t happy. I didn’t want to mess up anyone’s only shot at wedding day memories. Within a short time I was photographing other peoples weddings. I shot through High School and College. Still Life Studios was born in 2004 after I had learned on the job and charged a lot less. In truth the Still Life team is always learning and growing. We are trying new techniques and gaining new experiences while staying consistent with each day we capture. But everyone must start somewhere …

Lauren shot my cousin Bryan’s wedding by herself. Well at least with very little help from me. A family member from the Bride’s side was filling in the gaps I hope. I often would whisper to her on where to stand and what to watch out for. Like capturing the kiss and other moments. I told her a month before that she could shoot the wedding with me as I figured I would be shooting it. I guessed wrong and I was able to attend as a guest. I didn’t want to disappoint her so I took her along and asked if she could capture it. They were fine with it. Her biggest complaint? “Dad, why is everyone looking at me and smiling? Can you tell them all to stop?” I replied, “No Lauren, I can’t. You are just too cute with that monster camera.” So I guess she wasn’t paid for the gig, but she shot it and did pretty amazing for her first time out. The first and last shot were the only photos I took from the wedding because she was so darn cute. The one in the middle was what she captured while I was shooting her. For now I have a name tag for her. It says “Lauren – Still life Studios – Future Photographer” I guess we better update that soon to drop the “Future”. Something tells me though she is going to take a little longer then the usual 1-2 years to train but she is on her way!

Matt Wheeler – Still Life Studios – Proud Daddy who is just fine if his kids don’t want to be photographers. While they figure it out they certainly can be doted over right? :)
